Assignment #2 White Bird Dance Season photo observation.
As discussed in class, there are many reasons why you may or may not be drawn to a particular dance work photo enough to want to pay money for a ticket to watch! This assignment will help you look critically at still photos of dance, and draw conclusions based on the qualities of dance found in the photo.
Assignment Objectives:
1)Examine artistic still photos of dance.
2)Demonstrate knowledge of a dancer's vocabulary through critique.
3)Explain a visual reaction to dance as art.
4)Explore qualities of dance specific to the non-profit organization, White Bird Dance, and their mission.
5)Analyze the impact an artistic photo alone can have on an audience.
White Bird Dance brings an array of regional, national, and international dance companies to Portland. Their mission: "White Bird strongly believes in making dance exciting, educational, and accessible to everyone, young and old, of all social backgrounds, and will seek to realize these goals through contributed income and sponsorships, which will facilitate outreach to schools and keep ticket prices affordable."
~11 years, 118 dance companies and a total audience of over 250,000 - and all since Walter Jaffe and Paul King launched White Bird in July 1997 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing excellence in dance to Portland, Oregon.~~~

ASSIGNMENT #2 REQUIREMENTS
Please select two photos from the White Bird Dance Season catalogue of performances given to you in class. Choose one that you would pay money to see. Choose one that you have no interest in seeing.
Include the name of the dance company featured so that I know which one you are selecting.
Please include your reaction to the details of the photos by using the words available on this site under: "A Dancer's Vocabulary". These words have been discussed at length in class. Feel free to look up the dictionary definitions of the vocabulary words for further assistance.
You must explain IN DETAIL why you have chosen your particular photos. Full credit will be awarded to those who have fully developed their observations. Have fun!

ReplyDeleteAlea Sena, Assignment #2.
ReplyDeletePhoto #1.
U-Theatre photo(page 5): I would not pay money to see this performance because I think it looks boring. The man's flow looks stiff. Maybe it's supposed to be like that, but I don't particularly like this style of dancing.
Photo #2.
Lyon Opera Ballet photo(page 9): I would pay money to see this performance because I think it looks interesting. The dancer's choreography looks graceful. It's inspiring, the way they can fall so careless and confidently.
Alea, I completely agree. I love the description you gave of something appearing careless and confident. It gives me something to think about. Thanks.
